To our Kaya Community: thank you so much for being part of our mission where small acts of kindness make a huge difference when we #kayatogether. This month, we celebrated over 4000 school meals provided in the Philippines with our on the ground giving partner, Gawad Kalinga and I wanted to thank each and every one of you. 

This feeding program provides nutritious lunch meals through the school year in public elementary schools for children. Mothers have told me how these small savings add up over time and alleviate the financial stresses of their family. They also remind me the great challenges of motherhood that globally we don’t value or celebrate as much. Another big impact that normally gets overlooked is how this feeding program gives mothers more time. They don’t have to prepare & pack a lunch meal for every child for each day of the week. And we all know, time is one of the most valuable and limited resources for all of us. I remember how they’d brighten up to tell me all the other things they could do instead, or that they’d “sneak” in more rest because they could sleep in a little longer. And something so important for the future, is the impact free school meals have for children & their development. It’s hard to learn, play and grow on an empty stomach and the proper nutrition is life-changing to a child’s development. We’re proud these lunch meals are cooked fresh daily in the school’s kitchen by GK volunteers. The meals always comes with local fresh vegetables and rotates with protein from chicken, pork and fish, all purchased from small family farms.
